MORRISSEY FABRIC PILLOW MAKING

Boho, Home Décor, Premium, Made in California, Bohemian, Scatter Pillow, Rustic Style, Throw, Cover
Designers and Pillow makers from all over the globe visit my on-line Morrissey Fabric shop to find unique, clean, and workable textiles. I have loads of fun sourcing, cleaning, and restoring cloth from Guatemala, Africa, China, and Mexico. I've seen many photos of pillows and upholstery projects and interior spaces layered with my global textile finds so I know I'm in the business that's right for me and my customers. But I began my design career as a women's fashion designer. So now, with over thirty years of fashion design experience under my belt, I occasionally feel the need to create some of my own custom pieces using the beautiful textiles I find on my travels.

Making pillows is not something I get to do often. In fact, I wasn't sure I would remember how to sew a zipper into a pillow anymore. I looked at a few photos and decided to try a simple gold metal hidden zipper for a lumbar pillow. I was pleased with the result. I should mention that my philosophy has always been to use quality fabric to get quality results. Even when starting out with design projects. The lumbar pillow above was made with premium African mud cloth that was washed and line dried prior to cutting.

One of my favorite textile combinations is vintage African indigo (some call it mud cloth) and Guatemalan Corte cloth. Seen above, the pillow on the left is all Guatemalan ikat fabric. The center pillow is a combination of heavy Guatemalan indigo stripe corte, vintage African indigo, and a pure linen back. I liked it so much if It had not been too big for my sofa or I would have kept it for myself. The giant pillow on the right was also made from vintage African indigo and multi color Guatemalan ikat Corte. They make a relaxed and rustic statement.

Floor pillows have been coming on strong for extra seating. Floor cushions can be made from just about any upholstery fabric, so why not use a African mud cloth or Chinese Batik? Watch for future posts about floor seating coming soon.

This Fall season I will again carry this lively turquoise velvet print that was made into a pair of pillows. When a fabric has a strong color and an active print, I find a simple pillow shape is best. You could have them custom made with velvet on the front and back, but at $95 per yard most clients had me use a simple canvas back.
Of course I am happy to provide custom pillow bids through my Etsy shop or you can message me here on the Morrissey Fabric contact page.
